The Commonwealth of Virginia is uniquely positioned to assume a national leadership role in reforming and rebuilding nuclear energy. Two major nuclear companies, Babcock & Wilcox and AREVA have operations in our region, as well as several medium to smaller companies that support this industry.
Babcock & Wilcox located its Integrated Systems Test (IST) facility in 2012 to Bedford County within the Center for Advanced Engineering & Research, for a scaled prototype of the B&W mPowerTM reactor. This extensive test site uses electricity and collects data to verify the reactor design and safety performance, supporting B&W’s licensing activities with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The program is supported, in part, by a grant from the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission.
In 2013, Bedford County’s Office of Economic Development announced that the commercial nuclear energy subsidiary of The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W) will invest more than $16 million to expand in Bedford County. This location adds to B&W’s four sites already established throughout the region and the second B&W site to be established in Bedford County. There are currently more than 2,600 B&W employees in the region.
Other local nuclear energy companies include AREVA that provides solutions for low-carbon power generation in North America and all over the world; and companies that provide nuclear supplies and professional services such as nCore, Inc., FlowServe, and others.
